Sumapaz Vive

Located in the heart of Colombia, the Sumapaz Paramo extends from Bogotá D.C to the departments of Huila and Meta, making the Cruz Verde-Sumapaz complex the largest paramo in the world, with an area of approximately 3150km². Moreover, it is one of the regions that captures the most freshwater in the world, being of vital importance in the hydrological cycle of the eastern Andes mountain range, providing water to more than 2 million people in the capital and other ecosystems. Additionally, it is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna, with a biodiversity of 897 plant species and 260 mammal species.

This is a preservation, conservation, and restoration project founded in 2007, motivated by the interest in protecting the water sources, flora, and fauna of the Sumapaz páramo. To achieve this, we have chosen ecotourism as a way to coexist harmoniously with the ecosystem, while also transitioning activities from agricultural to conservation ones. We have also made various efforts to raise awareness about socio-environmental conflicts and the rural community living in the Sumapaz National Natural Park.

Committed to the protection of the Sumapaz Paramo, we have conceived a different way of doing ecotourism, which integrates the environmental, social and economic dimensions present in the Sumapaz National Natural Park, in order to provide an ecotouristic experience in harmony with the paramo and its inhabitants.

We believe that to preserve the Sumapaz Paramo it is essential to know its natural, historical and social richness, as well as the challenges it faces in its conservation and restoration, in addition to raising awareness among more people every day about the actions we can take to protect paramos worldwide and support the fight against climate change.
